Your 2018 Smoky Mountain Bucket List
You’ve got the whole year ahead of you. If you are planning a Smoky Mountain trip, we have some things you’ll have to add to your itinerary so you don’t miss the best of the Smokies. Whether you are taking a family vacation, a relaxing couple’s getaway, or a weekend excursion for one, these are some of our favorite things to do.
Explore the National Park – The Smoky Mountains are a major U.S. attraction and it’s with no wonder. Stunning scenery, peaceful rivers, exhilarating hikes, and more make it an exciting destination for all ages. Just driving through will give you all the best emotions as the natural beauty is unmatched. Keep on the lookout for wildlife often seen around the trails. If you want to get out and walk but aren’t up for a strenuous hike, take advantage of the marked “quiet walkways” perfect for a more low-key stroll through nature.
Visit Clingmans Dome – If you want to find the highest point of the Smoky Mountains, you’ll have to go to Clingmans Dome. Travel + Leisure named it on the list of the World’s Coolest Observation Decks. While this peak overlooks 100 miles across seven states, air pollution limits views to about 22 miles but breathtaking nonetheless.
Tour an Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery – Moonshine distilleries are located in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge and touring can be a fun activity for even those that are not interested in samples. You can see authentic-working moonshine stills and watch the entire process from beginning to end. Ask distillers questions during the process and enjoy samplings of homegrown shine. A vast selection of flavors are available including Apple Pie, Lemon Drop, and Blackberry. There are even exclusive flavors available only at these distilleries!
Play at Ober Gatlinburg – Many visit Ober to ski and snowboard down the slopes. This is a fun excursion for all ages and there is even more to enjoy at Ober. Take an Aerial Tramway ride up 2 miles to get a great view of the mountains. Get adventurous and ride the Ski Mountain Coaster or take the Alpine Slide. Ice skating is available year-round, you can purchase a wildlife encounter, play mini-golf, and more!
Bike Cades Cove - This 11 mile loop is one of the most popular destinations in the Smokies. Select times are reserved for only bicycle and foot traffic and the loop offers some of the best opportunities to see wildlife. Cades Cove is also rich with history featuring churches, barns, log houses, and other restored 19th century structures. At the entrance of the loop, you can pick up a booklet to detail the buildings you’ll see throughout the cove.
When marking off your Smoky Mountain Bucket List, take advantage of luxury Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge cabin rentals with all the amenities to make your getaway perfect. Choose from gorgeous lodges equipped with hot tubs, game rooms, home theatres, and more! Now, it’s time to get started on that bucket list.
